I am totally in love with the way your master bathroom vanity makeover turned out! Knowing that we won’t live in this house forever, we couldn’t justify replacing the cabinets . But this 1990’s bathroom HAD TO GO! So paint, new mirrors, new fixtures and voila! A brand new bathroom..or so it feels!

before the makeover

I regret that I didn’t take more pictures along the way, but here’s exactly what we did.

8 Steps to A Bathroom Vanity Makeover

Step 1: Remove the sheet mirror. Sand the paint border that had accumulated at its edges. Repaint the wall.

Step 2: Remove the “hollywood lights” as I call them. Ours was painted underneath, but yours may require sanding and repainting.

Step 3: Hang two individual mirrors. I thought about hanging another large mirror that was framed or even framing out the sheet mirror we had. But I’m so glad I decided on two individual mirrors.

Step 4: Hang new lighting. I decided to “mix metals” and do a bronze light with gold mirrors. I also knew I needed 4 light bulbs rather than 3 but definitely recommend a clear glass globe. It’s lighter and brighter.

Step 5: Replace faucets. It’s amazing how much a faucet can date a space. And you don’t realize it until it’s gone!

Step 6: Paint the cabinets. We did NOT sand our cabinets first. They’ve been painted now for over a year and there’s been no chipping! We used the liquid sander on the cabinet doors but not on the cabinet itself. There’s been no chipping in either place. It won’t hurt to use it but it’s not necessary.

  1. 1 application of liquid sander (optional)
  2. 1 application of bonding primer sealer
  3. 2 applications of Valspar cabinet enamel paint (semi-gloss interior)

the paint color we used was Valspar Vessel Gray Interior

I want to note that our painted cabinets do NOT feel “sticky.” You know how some paints feel tacky and the cabinets doors and drawers “stick” when they close?! Well, these don’t do that! I highly recommend this paint.

Another side note: We painted the edges with a brush but rolled the fronts of the doors and sides of the cabinet.

Step 7: New hardware. Again, a super simple and easy change that makes a BIG difference. We actually changed the cabinet door pulls from handles to knobs. We filled the hole with spackle, sanded, and painted over it.

Step 8: Add decor. I felt really silly “decorating” our bathroom. But I’m so glad I did. It feels bright and REFRESHING with a few plant sprouts in a pretty vase. I actually like spending time getting ready now!
